The Peter Gunn Theme is the theme music for the television show Peter Gunn. It was composed by Henry Mancini and originally recorded by the Henry Mancini Orchestra. The tune is a hip, brassy number with an insistent piano-and-bass line. The song earned Mancini an Emmy Award and two Grammys.
In video games, the song has been quite popular in the Spy Hunter, Espionage, and The Blues Brothers series.
Games
Spy Hunter (ARC)
When the game starts only a few bars are played of the Peter Gunn Theme before it stops. From then on, the theme is played again every time you enter a weapons van. The song continues to play on a loop until you crash.
This version is interesting, as the solo near the end of the loop is randomly generated.
Spy Hunter (A2)
Spy Hunter (A26)
In the graphically-challenged Atari version, programmed by Sean Pearce, the Peter Gunn Theme plays at the beginning of the game, and each time you enter the weapons van. Only the first couple notes of the song are played.
Spy Hunter (A8)
The Peter Gunn Theme plays on a loop as you drive. If you die, the song ends, but starts back up again when you enter a weapons truck. A good portion of the song is played, but not nearly as long as the full version.
Spy Hunter (C64)
The Peter Gunn Theme plays when you start a new game or enter a weapons truck. A good portion of the song is played, but not nearly as long as the full version.
Spy Hunter (CV)
Spy Hunter (PCB)
In the PC boot loader port the Peter Gunn Theme plays at the title screen for 25 seconds, and then unceremoniously stops in the middle of a bar. The music is played through the PC Speaker, which doesn't do the song much justice.
Elevator Repairman (A8)
Spy Hunter (NES)
The music from the NES port behaves identically to the arcade version. It contains the entire Peter Gunn Theme with all the solos. Because of its length, the song is only looped once in the recording.
