Michael Sokyrka is a Canadian composer and sound designer. His work can be heard in many early Distinctive Software titles. Ever since 1989, Michael has been working for Electonic Arts. He no longer composes music at EA, but is an audio producer there. He does continue to compose and play music.

Music Development

GB/NES

Mike used Kris Hatlelid's sound driver and wrote in ASM macros.

TG16

The only TurboGrafx-16 title Mike worked on was Champions Forever Boxing. We asked Mike about what it was like developing music for the console:

I don't think we had a system in place to actually hear the music on the TG16. So in order to hear how the music actually sounded on the TG16 and other platforms, I would have to wait until the code updates were compiled by the software engineer. Code updates didn't happen regularly - maybe weekly in some cases, so any tweaks or changes to the music that were required weren't heard until a few days after implementation. Then there were timing issues with the clock rate of the target device as compared with the sequencer version (MOTU Performer back then - DAW's didn't exist). Sometimes each track of a tune could be out of sync when heard back. There was also no way for the composer to edit voices yet alone subtle nuances i.e. volume, attack, decay, sustain etc. of the internal synth so we could only hope each voice used on the sequencer would translate to the voice that the programmer would create. I'm not sure if Kris programmed the audio engine. I do remember hearing the playback of music back then of some products only after the product went final when no further changes could be made - and saying "what the f..." how did that get corrupted. There was always concern from the producers when products were nearing final that any changes could potentially crash the program.
