Mega Man: Dr. Wily's Revenge is the first entry in the Mega Man series to be released on the Game Boy, combining elements of Mega Man (NES) and Mega Man II (NES), albeit being based primarily on the former. What little story there is involves, as you've probably guessed, Dr. Wily being out for revenge on Mega Man and rebuilding four of the six Robot Masters from the original game (Guts Man and Bomb Man evidently failed to make the grade). Once you've re-defeated them it's off to Dr. Wily's fortress, where four more Robot Masters, this time from the second game, are waiting for you, along with Wily's newest project, Enker the "Mega Man Killer."

Development of the game was given to Minakuchi Engineering, with Capcom supervising development and publishing the game. Overall, Minakuchi did a pretty solid job of recreating the Mega Man experience on the Game Boy. The main drawback to the game is its punishing difficulty, even compared to the other Mega Man games, as the smaller screen size means you have far less room to manoeuvre, and item drops are rare, to the point where it's not especially uncommon to finish a level without ever getting a single life or weapon energy refill. Being based primarily on the first Mega Man also means that Rush and energy tanks are absent, though mercifully you do at least get a password system. In all, it's a decent enough first effort for the Game Boy series, but a little lacking compared to the third entry onwards.

The title screen. It might not say it, but Dr. Wily is definitely out for revenge!

Music

The game's soundtrack is a mix of original music, combined with remixes of Manami Matsumae's stage themes from the first NES game, and a couple of Takashi Tateishi's tracks from the second NES game. The remixes are done pretty well, adding a new feel to the NES originals, and while the original music isn't quite as memorable, it does the job well enough, with the first Dr. Wily stage music in particular being a highlight.

In what would become a curious staple of the Game Boy sub-series, the music rip features an unused track, apparently an early version of the ending theme.

Credits

(Source: Comparison with other Minakuchi Engineering games; game lacks credits)

The identity of the game's composer(s), beyond Manami Matsumae and Takashi Tateishi's roles in the two NES games, is unknown. Some sources credit Makoto Tomozawa as the game's composer, but this is almost certainly untrue, as Makoto has said that his first game was Aladdin (SNES), which wasn't made for another two years. The composer's identity is most likely Toru Osada, as he was the main composer at Minakuchi Engineering in this period, and the game's music sounds quite similar in parts to that of SolarStriker (GB), which credits him as composer and shares a lot of the same sound effects.

The game uses Minakuchi Engineering's original Game Boy sound driver, which was programmed by Hiroshi Wada.

Ripping Game Boy music is a very arduous process that is beyond the scope of this site. The soundtrack was recorded using the Game Emu Player in foobar2000.
