The .M files are the music files used by Xeen games. They contain interwoven MIDI and FM synth commands for complete compatibility between cards with support for FM (such as Adlib and Sound Blaster) and MIDI (such as Roland and Wave Blaster). The inclusion of sound effects into the music yields undesired results when using hardware that doesn't synthesize sound effects very well, like the Roland MT-32.
