King's Quest II: Romancing the Throne continues the story if King Graham. After saving the kingdom of Daventry and becoming king, Graham now seeks a queen to keep him company and father his children. Using the powers of the magic mirror, Graham finds a suitable bride in the land of Kolyma, but finding her is no easy matter. King's Quest II: Romancing the Throne also begins the tradition of using puns for subtitles.

The DOS port of King's Quest II uses the same engine from the DOS port of King's Quest: Quest For the Crown (DOS). The player controls Graham by using the arrow keys or keyboard to move him around, and typing out commands such as "look at the tree" and "take the trident". The player will have to spend a lot of time wandering around the map, carefully examining the various plants, rocks, and people that inhabit the land.

It is unknown whether or not the original PCjr version of the game has all the same music as the DOS version. A copy of the PCjr version must be found.

Music

King's Quest II includes some of the tunes found in the first game, including the Title, Danger, and Dead tunes. However, the quality of the 3 voice soundtrack isn't as impressive. The composer didn't take advantage of the 3 voice chip as much as the KQ1 composer. If the King's Quest music was updated for the DOS port in 1987, and the KQ2 music was made for the PCjr game in 1985, then it makes since that KQ1's music is better. Even with a lower fidelity sound, King's Quest 2 has over twice as many songs as King's Quest.

Several public domain sources are used in King's Quest 2. Greensleeves is again used for the title music, and Chopin's Funeral March is used again when you die. Also, Bach's Toccata and Fugue In D Minor plays in Dracula's castle, Neal Hefti's Batman Theme (used without legal consent) plays during the Batmobile gag, and the final wedding scene music starts with Mendelssohn's Wedding March, and then finishes with Wagner's Bridal Chorus.

Players who had a 3 voice chip heard better music than those with just a PC speaker. Both soundtracks have been recorded, tracks starting with a 1 are recorded from the Tandy 3 Voice chip, tracks starting with a 2 are recorded from the PC Speaker.

The music was ripped out using AGI Studio 1.38b. Because there currently aren't any players that can accurately support this format, the music was recorded during game play through DOSBox emulating a Tandy 1000.
