While the movie ''Highlander'' is a cult classic, this game was panned heavily by critics and players alike. The action is slow, the animation is poor, and the controls are sluggish and unresponsive. The game lacks any real strategy, and you can win the first several rounds simply by mashing the attack button. It's obvious that [[Ocean]] rushed this movie tie-in as fast as possible in order to ride the success of the film.

Highlander is a side-view fighting game loosely based on the movie. The game has four characters, Connor MacLeod, Juan Sanchez Villa-Lobos Ramirez, Fazil, and the Kurgan. You fight as Connor MacLeod and you must fight your opponent to the death, each fight ending in decapitation. However, since there are only three opponents, you have to fight them in a loop until you eventually lose. Each time the opponents switches, the background changes between Connor's house, the Madison Square Garden garage, and the roof of Silvercup Studios. Play continues with the opponent's AI continually getting better until you eventually lose. During the game, Queen's A Kind of Magic plays on repeat.

While the movie Highlander is a cult classic, this game was panned heavily by critics, players and even the C64 arranger alike. The action is slow, the animation is poor, and the controls are sluggish and unresponsive. The game lacks any real strategy, and you can win the first several rounds simply by mashing the attack button. It's obvious that Ocean Software rushed this movie tie-in as fast as possible in order to ride the success of the film.

The game features only a single song (not counting the loader) that plays on repeat for the entirety of the game, A Kind of Magic. Although the song wasn't featured in the movie Highlander, some of the lyrics are heard, and it was heard in Highlander II: The Quickening and the TV series. Martin Galway created a wonderful SID version of the entire song, complete with the guitar and bass solos.
