Garrison is a Gauntlet clone, originally created for the Amiga during lack of an official port.

Rather uniquely, Garrison (C64) uses the keyboard to allow 3 simultaneous players rather than 2. However, even if one dies, you cannot add a 4th one until next level.

Garrison (C64) has all 128 levels from Garrison (AMI) and 4 levels from Garrison II: The Legend Continues (AMI). The first 4 levels are always the same, and the other 128 levels follow at random. Unfortunately, after level 132, the game hangs. In 2007, the C64 scene fixed this and added their own text ending.

The graphics are more varied than Gauntlet (C64), and unlike Garrison (AMI), the scrolling keeps up perfectly, but overall, the graphics and use of sound effects are the ugliest.

Music

The C64 soundtrack to Garrison was Ramiro Vaca's first task at Rainbow Arts and the first release to use Chris Hülsbeck's durable TFMX system.

It is a cross between the Amiga original and Vaca's own ideas. Vaca's music is more dramatic and fitting, but the sound effects are monotonous: only 6 out of Vaca's 16 sound effects are used, not spread over the 3 SID chip voices as well as possible, and the beat is no longer in sync with the time.

Recording

All songs were recorded from VICE 3.2 with the model 6581 (ReSID) and a filter bias of -196. While the recorder considered this configuration most noticeable and interesting, it is unconfirmed how close it is to Vaca's.
