The Emerson, Lake and Palmer were a progressive rock supergroup formed in 1970 in London and being one of the most popular progressive rock bands in 1970s. They consisted of keyboardist Keith Emerson, vocalist, bassist, guitarist and songwriter Greg Lake and drummer Carl Palmer. The group is usually referred as one of the first supergroups, because Emerson found his popularity fefore ELP while consisting in The Nice, Lake - in King Krimson and Palmer - in Atomic Rooster and Crazy World of Arthur Brown. Jimi Hendrix could have been also in this band (that might have been called HELP in this case), but died before. The style of the music was jazz, classical music, mixed with parts of rock, with large use of Keith's Hammond organ, Moog syntheser and piano parts (sometimes two or even three keyboards at the same time).

The group sould around 48 million albums at the world, and their most popular songs were Tarkus and Karn Evil 9 - both of them were regularly played at the giggings. The popular feature of them were drum solos of Palmer, played on a very large amount of cymbals, snares, etc. on high speed in the middle of concert for minutes.

The main activity of the band ended up with disbanding of ELP in 1979. However, there were concerts and sometimes even new albums with reformed or original members. They performed their last concert in 2010.

Both Emerson and Lake have died in 2016, leaving Palmer as the only surviving member of the band.

Matthias Steinwachs has named ELP among the bands he likes, "depending on his mood".
