- For other games in the series see Doom.
Doom for the Saturn is, like Doom (PS1), actually something of a compilation re-release of Doom (DOS) and Doom II: Hell On Earth (DOS), combining most of the campaign from both games. The storyline has you playing a marine who is the only survivor of a disastrous experiment that sees a portal to Hell opened, and everyone else at his base on the Martian moon of Phobos zombified. You are tasked with fighting through the zombies and hellspawn, before taking the fight into the depths of Hell itself, only to then discover that the Earth itself is under attack.
The Saturn incarnation of Doom definitely isn't the worst incarnation of the game, but it's perhaps the most disappointing. Due to meddling from id Software, who refused to allow developers Rage Software to properly use the system's formidable 2D rendering capabilities due to the hit to image quality that would be entailed, the game ended up with decent graphics (albeit slightly inferior to those of the PS1), but very lackluster performance.
