Alone in the Dark 2, often shortened AITD2, is the sequel to Alone In the Dark (DOS). The game came out on both CD-ROM and floppy disks.

AITD2 is very different from its predecessor, which has led to a lot of criticism from fans. Namely, it drops the horror element and has a scenario considered weaker, revolves around action and gunfighting, and suffers from frequent framerate drops due to a very large amount of enemies on screen, rendering the gameplay laborious with the poor aiming.

The player incarns detective Edward Carnby, one of the two possible protagonists from the first game. In this opus, he must rescue a little girl named Grace from a gang of pirates living since centuries thanks to voodoo magic. The game is separated into two parts: First, you have to enter Hell's Kitchen, a mansion owned by the crew's captain, One-Eyed Jack, and slay the large amount of pirates found outside and inside the mansion. You then get captured by a voodoo witch and tied in the Flying Dutchman's bilge. In the second part, you alternate between Carnby and Grace to vainquish once and for all the pirates who, in the ship, reincarnated in their true form, before killing One-Eyed Jack and escaping.

Alone in the Dark 2 keeps the same controls and interface as its predecessor. The player moves using the arrow keys, double-tapping to run and pressing space with an arrow key to perform various actions. This time, however, there is a much larger amount of weapons usable, along with a lot more items which affect the character, such as bulletproof vests, alcohol that makes you dizzy, and so on.

Music

AITD2 features very nice music, composed by Jean-Luc Escalant. The CD-ROM version uses RedBook CD Audio while the floppy version has OPL2 music with surprisingly good instrument patches. Most tracks are almost identical in the two versions, though some slightly differ, or have different instrumentation and/or speed. There is also a few OPL2 tracks that are very different. Most notably, "Getting Into Action" sounds like it was an early draft.

The music mostly doesn't loop. There are plenty of tracks from which the game will randomly choose after a few seconds of silence. Some tracks also play at precise instances, for example when the player is in certain areas, is in at a certain phase of the game, dies, or an important scene occurs. The tracks from which the game will play at random are separated in two groups: The first, including most of the music, plays in the first part of the game, when the player is outside/inside the mansion. The second plays on the boat.

There is also an unused music ("Pitch Black"), presumably also to be played on the boat. It appears in both the floppy and CD versions. In an interview from around 2008, Escalant stated he composed around 30 different themes for the game. Since only 20 are used in the final game, it is likely that Pitch Black never being played was an error or a last minute decision, as otherwise it would have been cut like the other ~9 tracks Escalant mentionned. Unfortunately, the interview is no longer existent and does not appear to have ever been mirrored or archived.

(Info)

CD Tracks were ripped directly from the disc. Tracks 2-22 are all included in the above recording table (due to being digital are not in the rip). Tracks 23-63 are not included at all as they are in-game voice-overs rather than songs.

For the SB/AdLib music selection the game uses native ADL format. Because there is no plugin for decoding these files, all the songs were dumped to DRO and recorded using Game Emu Player.

For sounds, the game uses Creative Labs's VOC.
