Al Unser Jr. Turbo Racing is a game developed and published by Data East. In this game, you can either play as Little Al himself or customize your own driver and car. There are three modes of play; Time Trial A, Time Trial B, and World Grand-Prix Series. The goal of Time Trial is to get the best lap times for each track. Mode A has opponent vehicles, while Mode B does not. In the World Grand-Prix Series, you must race 16 courses, and get the best score at the end to win.

Music

The game has 14 songs; 5 of which are in-game tunes. Data East got four of their sound team members to create all the game's music and sound. Though he's credit, Takafumi Miura has stated he only worked on sound effects on Data East's games. The sound team worked hard with the NES's limitations, and pushed some of its boundaries. For example, in many songs, you can hear what sounds like two drums playing on the Noise channel at the same time, when in reality, they are arpeggiated.

It is unknown which DECO sound team member composed which song. They should be contacted for verification in which songs they worked on.

The original Japanese version has different music. It does share music with the international versions, but is differently arranged with added intros and pitch changes.

Because the game was released in Europe, the recording will include the PAL version's soundtrack. It's the same as the US version, except with different instrument patches and played a half-step lower, the latter being normal for NES games released in Europe. However, unlike most PAL games, the music plays at the proper speed.

To create the game's audio, the DECO sound team wrote in 6502 assembly macros on an MSX computer, using a sound driver by someone with the last name Ogoshi.

The Japanese version features two different possible cutscenes that can play after a race has been finished. However, these were taken out of the international versions, leaving them with two unused songs.

(Sources: USA, Europe, Japan)

Unlike most games where you must beat a game to see the credits, this game displays them on the title screen. The Japanese version credits the developers with numbers and letters, which could have been their employee numbers at the time.

Ripping NES music is an arduous process that is beyond the scope of this site. The music was recorded in NSFPlay Synthesia mod.

Audio Devices

The game uses the NES's RP2A03. The game uses Data East's sound driver, written by someone with the surname Ogoshi.
