- For other games in this series, see Age of Empires.
Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings was the long awaited sequel to Age of Empires (W32). It introduced a bunch of new features compared to its predecessor, some of which include formations, buildings up to scale, a customizable trigger system for scenarios, narration, and a new game mode called regicide in which you try to assassinate the king of another player. Using the new trigger system the single player campaigns were also more immersive since the game could react in new ways depending on your actions. There were also huge advancements made in the way the AI played and in the path finding algorithm.

Music
All the music (save for ...Where Credit is Due) in the game has been created using a Boss DSS-330 synthesizer and an E-mu ESI-32 sampler, and finally the mixing and editing was done in SoundForge. The songs were produced in CD audio quality, but there was also a separate MIDI track produced in Cakewalk which was used in the demo version of the game. The MIDI track includes some tracks that were pulled from the final CD audio track. Also, because the game uses CD audio you can actually just put the CD into your CD player to listen to it. Just skip the first track which is the program.
All song titles have been confirmed by Stephen Rippy. Both the CD and the MIDI songs have been recorded, with the 1st track being the CD quality music and the 2nd track the MIDI songs.

The soundtrack is CD audio on the game disc. However it has been combined into a single track with the tracks slightly overlapping each other in order to save space. Because of this the tracks have been ripped from the soundtracks where they are completely separate; they were ripped using EAC. The MIDI soundtrack is located in the .\sound\midi folder of the demo version and was converted with dBpoweramp Music Converter.
Joey JoJo is an unreleased track that has been acquired from the official press kit. The MIDI files for Bass Bag (Single Mix), I Will Beat on Your Behind, Operation: Monkey, and Ride, Lawrence, Ride! were only included in the demo version of Age of Empires II: The Conquerors (W32), but have been included for completeness sake since they were composed for this game but excluded for some reason.
CD audio is too large to store in it's raw format, besides, the recording sounds almost the same as the rip and as such only MIDI files are included. The MIDI is type 1.
