Tony Williams is a British composer, sound designer, and sound programmer. Williams has played in the band Stipe, which is a tribute band for R.E.M. He was their bass player from 2002–2012. The band played all over the UK, Ireland, and various locations in Europe. He has also programmed a piece of piano tutoring software called Ambrose Piano Tabs.

Williams started working on games in 1986 at Icon Design and left a year later. In 1987, he worked at Software Creations and programmed some of their Amstrad and ZX Spectrum games. In 1988, he started video game music and programming at Lothlorien. In 1989, he started Sound Images along with Paul Tonge and used this name as an alias throughout most of his video game music career. He would compose music, create sound effects and program sound drivers and outsource them to various game developers. During Software Creations' SNES and Genesis development, the Follin brothers would work on SNES versions of the games while Williams would convert them to the Genesis. In 1999, he quit video game music and worked at Game-Play Studios as a managing director. In September of 2002, he worked at Nissimo as the director, creating the puzzle game FruitFall. Ever since July 2009, he has been working at GSD as a consultant.

Audio Development

DOS

I wrote a converter to compress and optimise MIDI files and a custom player for each sound card.

Williams wrote his MIDI files in Notator on the Atari ST.

GEN

It was based on MIDI, which then went through a data cruncher (DOS-based PC code), and got played back via a custom driver written in Z80 assembler. If I remember correctly, I also had a realtime module, which piped MIDI data through to the Genesis as you played/composed.

All games that use his sound driver give credit to Sound Images in the ROM text. The driver started at v1.0 and ended at v1.5.

SNES

Williams only composed two SNES games which were both for MotiveTime. He used a sound engine by Richard Frankish.
