Ken Silverman was born on November 1, 1975 in Yorktown, NY, USA. In 1980 his family moved to East Greenwich, Rhode Island. In 1983 his family purchased a Texas Instruments 99/4A computer which hooked Silverman on computers and programming. He spent much of his free time experimenting with computers and writing code for them.

In 1990, he began to become more serious with his programming hobby and in 1991 he finished Kentris, a Tetris clone featuring AdLib music in his custom format. After Silverman saw Wolfenstein 3D, he decided to make his own 3D game and begun Ken's Labyrinth. The version that most people are familiar with was published by Epic MegaGames in 1993, when Ken was still only seventeen years old. The game features a soundtrack composed, arranged, and engineered entirely by Silverman.

Once Apogee saw what Silverman was capable of, they hired him to design a new 3D engine for their company. The result was the famous Build engine which went on to power the game Duke Nukem 3D, and numerous others.

Silverman currently lives in Rhode Island. His primary hobby is still programming, and he still composes music from time to time.
