Would you like to be part of the ever growing database of videogame music? We are looking for able-bodied people to help contribute to the VGMPF. There are several types of people we're looking for to help expand the database as seen below.

Images

We need scans of soundtracks and game boxes, screenshots of games, and photos of composers that we don't already have. The bigger the image the better.

The following games need new or cleaner box art:

Unknown Composers

If you can get information about hidden tracks, composers, or various other music related info, we want it. We would especially like to figure out who wrote music for games that don't list credits.

View the Unknown Composer List for all of the missing composers.

Unused Music

The following games feature music that doesn't seem to be played anywhere in the game. If you know where in the game the song is played, please send us an email explaining how we can verify where the song is played. If the track is not played in the game, we would like an explaination from the composer or game designer of what it was supposed to be for or why it was left out of the game.

Game

Tracks

Notes

AD&D: Heroes of the Lance - NES

08

Possibly game over fanfare or bad ending music. Should compare with the MSX version.

AD&D: Pool of Radiance - NES

28

-

Archer Maclean's Pool - DOS

02

Has an unused MIDI file. Perhaps it was for testing the MIDI driver?

Devil World - FC

06

-

Dr. Mario - NES

13

-

Dungeon Hack - DOS

02

It seems like it should be for scene 2, but is there a scene 2? I never found it.

Gauntlet - NES

09

-

Ghosts 'N Goblins - NES

14

Similar to stage 5/6 music, but not played on either playthrough. Maybe it was scrapped in favor of the music that was used?

The Goonies II - NES

11

-

Guerrilla War - NES

15

-

Jimmy White's Whirlwind Snooker - DOS

2

Has the same unused track as Archer Maclean's Pool.

Little Nemo: The Dream Master - NES

20

-

Rampage - NES

04, 05

-

Raptor: Call of the Shadows - DOS

13, 14, 15, 16

-

Shadowgate - NES

13

Most likely for the unused goblin room.

Super Mario Bros. - NES

17

Sounds like an early game over fanfare.

Trojan - NES

15

Should check arcade version for match.

Tecmo Bowl - NES

19, 20, 21

-

Tetris - NES

10, 11

?

Top Gun - NES

06

Possibly an unused pause fanfare?

Ultima IV: Quest of the Avatar - C64

10, 11, 12, 13

-

Ultima: Exodus - NES

Wizball - C64

Classical Composers

Also, many videogames use classical music as part of their soundtrack. This is partially because most classical music is in the public domain, but also because classical music adds some culture and style to the music that you can't get anywhere else. There is an extremely large amount of classical music and it is a demanding task to become an aficionado. Because most classical music is in the public domain, it's rare to have the composer credited. However, in order to provide a complete listing of game credits the Videogame Music Preservation Foundation makes every attempt to credit all of the composers whose work is utilized. However, because of the scope of classical music it is often difficult for us to readily discern the original composer or the proper name of the work. For each piece that may be classical in nature, we've added a link to the song, and any clues as to the origin.

Sounds like it was originally done on organ, possibly J.S. Bach?

Pirates! Gold

MIDI soundtrack

J.S. Bach is listed in the credits of the game, but his contributed tracks are not listed.

Rippers

Rips must be in their original format. If the game created their own audio format, then keep it in that format. Someone will write a converter or player for it eventually. Do not convert to General MIDI if the game didn't use it. If the method for storing the music is unique then create your format for storing the audio data to extract it in. Only rip from freeware games or games that are at least ten years old. The following games either need rips, have incomplete rips, or have rips with playback problems. If there are missing tracks or problems with the ripped tracks an explaination can be found in the ripping review.

Recorders

Submitted recordings should be encoded into FLAC at 16 bit stereo quality. For looping music, have two full loops and a ten second fade out as the third loop. If the first loop of the song is over 2 minutes in length, then a single loop with a ten second fade out will suffice. Official soundtrack lengths are acceptible, but we prefer our standard because some soundtracks will loop the song too many times or not enough. Only record from freeware games or games older than ten years.

Programmers

We always need a player that supports new audio formats. If you have a player that supports one or more of the original videogame formats please notify us, we'd be happy to showcase it. Winamp plug-ins are preferred, but stand-alone players are also appreciated.

The following formats do not have a player that we're aware of:

Electranoid, Laser Light

FT Format (*.ftf)

Vinyl Goddess From Mars MUS (*.vgfm)

Vinyl Goddess From Mars

We'd really love to see a plug-in that emulates the Roland MT-32 hardware for playing MIDI.
