Game
Age of Empires was a late comer in the real-time strategy genre, but the design team used the knowledge of its predecessors to create a very advanced game. It features all the typical aspects of RTS combat, but throws in many different means of victory as well as diplomatic pursuits.
Music
The music has a lovely ancient sound capitalizing on old instruments like drums and wood winds. Because the game uses CD audio you can actually just put the CD into your CD player to listen to it. Just skip the first track which is the program. There is also a MIDI soundtrack that was used when the game was run without the CD. Some of the music is just a general MIDI version of the CD audio but most of it is new music that only exists in MIDI form. Both soundtracks have been recorded and can be downloaded below.
Ripping
The soundtrack is CD audio on the game disc; it was ripped using CDEX. The MIDI soundtrack is located in the Sound folder after the install and was recorded with Microsoft's MIDI with output driver using Winamp. Tracks labeled 1XX are from the CD rip, tracks labeled 2XX are the MIDI recordings. The MIDI is type 1.
